Vern Widner Lambert, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016, at his residence.
A celebration of his life will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Gordon Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant, officiated by Rev. Josh White. The family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m., and burial with military honors will be at the First Baptist Church cemetery.
Vern was born on Nov. 16, 1926, in Rowan County to the late Flave Rastus Lambert and Daisy Nance Lambert. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. He played baseball while in the Army and was later drafted by a major league team but was unable to pursue that dream. He was a truck driver for 30 years, working first for Johnson Motor Lines and retiring from Yellow Freight. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Joyce Busbin Lambert; a brother, Ben Lambert; and a sister, Peggy Lambert.
Vern is remembered as a loving, caring father. He is survived by two daughters, Joan L. Cauble and husband, Jeffrey, and Carol L. Blair and husband, Fred; grandchildren, Amber Furr and Donald Smith and wife, Onnie; two great grandchildren, Rob and Gabe; and a sister, Lib DeBerry.
