Vergie Elizabeth Furr Krimminger, 82, passed away surrounded by her loving family on August 21, 2019. Born in Concord, North Carolina on July 4, 1937, Vergie was known as being a kind, fun loving and no nonsense person who cared about her family and her community. Her beautiful smile made a lasting impression on all who met her.
Vergie enjoyed throwing holiday parties for friends and family with her husband, Bill Krimminger, at their home in Concord, as well as at their lake house at Lake Tillery. Many evenings were spent dancing with friends to songs from the 1950s and 1960s. For years, she and Bill threw a New Year’s Eve Party, where all of their friends cooked and ate breakfast together at midnight to start the New Year off right.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who always put the needs of her family above her own. Though she didn’t care for cooking, she was a fantastic baker, whose cherry pound and red velvet cakes are legendary. She enjoyed reading (she read the newspaper every day and always spotted the typos), exercising, going to the beach, UNC basketball and traveling across the country with her husband in their RV. She meticulously documented their trips out West in photo albums.
Vergie was a wonderful mother to her daughter, Lori, and had an amazing talent for finding her the best teachers, camps, classes and tutors (this was way before Google). The twosome enjoyed going to plays and shopping together, and her daughter will be forever grateful for her mother’s support, love, wisdom and encouragement.
However, the light of Vergie’s life was her beloved grandchildren, Graydon and Margot, also known as The Tater Tots. They called her Mama K. and will miss her dearly.
An active member of Cold Springs United Methodist Church, Vergie served on various committees throughout the years, in addition to being a youth leader, choir member and Sunday school teacher. She was also active in United Methodist Women, as she held a variety of offices and attended regional and national conventions. You could always count on seeing her volunteer at the church’s Annual Barbecue and Brunswick Stew in October. In addition, she was also active in the Mount Pleasant Lioness Club and Lions Club for years.
Vergie graduated third in her class from Winecoff High School in 1955 prior to graduating from Evans Business College. When her daughter went to college, she decided to do the same and proceeded to earn an Associate’s Degree from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, and she came within two credits of graduating with a bachelors of arts from UNC Greensboro.
Before joining her husband at Krimminger Machine Co., Vergie worked a variety of clerical jobs. During her career at Krimminger Machine Co., she also earned her real estate license.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Charles Rhodes, Dr. Lara Pons, Tonya Swaringen, the nurses on the fourth floor of Atrium Health Cabarrus and the staff of Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County for their excellent care.
Vergie is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bill Krimminger, of Concord; daughter, Lori Elizabeth Krimminger Tate (John), of Cornelius; grandchildren, Graydon Garren and Margot Elizabeth Tate, of Cornelius; and sisters, Linda Griffin (Bob) of Indian Trail, Judy Starnes of Spartanburg, South Carolina and Brenda Shaver (Ed) of Concord; brother-in-law, Bob Krimminger (Wanda) of Locust, along with a lot of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Mildred Furr and Elizabeth Louise Wentz; sister, Hedy Shue, and brother, Paul Harrington.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 25 from 2-4 p.m. at Cold Springs United Methodist Church, 2550 Cold Springs Road, Concord with a service following at 4 p.m. Reverend Dr. Tony Bell will officiate, along with Reverend Randy Wall.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making memorials to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or St. Jude’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org. One of the best ways to honor Vergie’s memory is to live as she did, being kind to others and helping those who need it.
