Shelby Elizabeth Wilson Manus, 98, of Rockwell, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017, following a short stay at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.
A celebration of Shelby’s life will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Boger Reformed Church, where she was the oldest member. The Rev. Chad Kyler will officiate, with special music and comments by Dr. J. Donald McManus. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Manus family will receive friends between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Friday at Gordon Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.
Shelby was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Cabarrus County to the late Brittan E. Wilson and Florence Mary Anna Cline Wilson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Richard Lemual Manus, who died in 1991.
After graduating from Mt. Pleasant High School, Shelby worked as a sewer in the hosiery mill for many years. She had a love of sewing and quilting, and shared this talent with many neighbors and friends. An avid gardener, she enjoyed cooking and canning the bounty from her many gardens and sharing the results with friends and family. She loved her church and for as long as she was able, she put her creative talents to use working in fellowship with the church women preparing hand-crafted items, canning and baking goods for the annual Lord’s Acre Sale every October. She was also the designated chili-maker for Boger’s Friday hot dog sales for many years. Shelby also enjoyed painting saws, fishing, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and watching her sports on TV.
Survivors include her daughter, Shelbia Lou M. Mullis and husband Kenneth; three granddaughters, Dana M. Garrow (Ron), Kerry M. Harper, and Laurie M. Miller (Robert); and 12 great-grandchildren, Jonathan Garrow and fiancée Corinthia, Phillip Garrow and wife Sarah, Ben Garrow, Claire Garrow, Virginia Harper, Marshall Harper and fiancée Leighann, Garrett Miller, Callie Miller, Taylor Miller and fiancé Bradley, Dalton Miller, Hayden Miller, and Tristan Miller.
Shelby’s family extends special thanks to the staff of Tucker Hospice House, especially chaplain Sonya Campbell and nurse Shari Walsh, for their compassionate care of Shelby and the Manus family during her last days. They are also thankful for Shelby’s special companion, Diane Yeary, for her love and care of Mrs. Shelby.
Memorial contributions in Shelby’s name may be directed to the Boger Reformed Church Memorial Fund, 7313 Gold Hill Road, Concord, NC, 28025.
