Robert "Bob" Eugene Young, recently passed away in hospice care at 03:55 PM EST on January 24, 2015.
Graveside service will be 2:00pm Thursday, at Center United Methodist Church Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Tony Allen, the family will receive friends following the service.
Bob was born in Cumberland, MD on February 9 1930, as the third child of Duane Robert and Odell Pearl Phares Young. Growing up during the Great Depression, Robert went to work as a teenager at Ortz bakery twisting bread. In 1951 Bob enlisted in the US Army and rose to the rank of SSG in Baker Battery, 674th FA, 187th ARCT, 11th Airborne Division and serving with distinction for three years in Korea. After leaving the service, Bob moved back to Cumberland, MD where he met his darling wife Colleen Catherine Schultz and was married on March 12, 1955. During this time Bob worked at Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG) for 12 and a half years. After leaving PPG, Bob started working for Kelly-Springfield Tire Company where he worked as a Journeyman Electrician for 11 and a half years. In 1984 Bob moved to Concord, NC and began working for Philip Morris Tobacco Company, retiring on February 1, 1996. Upon retiring, Bob and Colleen purchased an RV and toured the United States, visiting all 50 states, including a memorable trips to Alaska and Hawaii. Bob was a proud member of the American Legion, was a Boy Scout District Master Trainer, the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 12 of the Potomac Council, and a member of the Center United Methodist Church. Bob is preceded in death by his wife Colleen Young, his sister Martha Shaffer, and brothers Gerald Young, Laten Young, and Kenneth Young.
Bob is survived by his brother Willard Young and wife Patricia "Peggy", sister Bertha "Jean" Miller and husband James, his sons Robert Anthony Young and wife Tammy Lynn Young of Concord, NC, and Craig Louis Young and wife Melanie Lynn Young of Ashland, KY. He is further survived by his Grandchildren Jessalyn Marshall, Crystal Pearson, Robert Young, and Daniel Young; and seven Great-Grandchildren from his Granddaughters.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Center United Methodist Church, 1119 Union Street South, Concord, NC 28025.
