After a five month illness involving her heart Peggy age 62 died peacefully at Duke University Hospital on May 24, 2011
She was born in Wenache, Washington near the river, of the same name. Along; with two older sisters and a brother, her father and mother Rex and Fay moved to Orcas Island where Peggy grew to maturity in the beautiful Puget Sound. Her early mentor was the artist Ms. Loggie who encouraged her. Peggy went to Brigham and Women's of Harvard for her nursing degree. There lifelong friends were made. The group graduated and went to San Francisco, where all nursed. She married Breck Alexander (deceased), returned to Boston and later returned to Seattle, where she headed a clinic. Subsequently she did ER nursing in Petersburg, Alaska, then later in Key West, Florida.
She and her friend Cassandra de Kramen a botanical artist traveled through Europe to Istanbul, then to return to Whidbey Island where she established her home and nursed at Whidbey General. Later she sailed the Atlantic in her boat to European and Mediterranean ports, finally to Key West and eventually home to Whidbey Island. To nurse again.
She and R. B. Moorehead, Jr., M. D. met after a long absence and she returned to Mt. Pleasant NC where they were married and made their home. She nursed at Northeast in Concord. Of her best friends were those from MGH Nursing, St. James, those of the MPHS class of 1960 and her wonderful art teachers Mrs. Jeannie Tomlin. Many in Cheraw, SC will miss her especially the Staff and Doctors at Chesterfield General, Drs. Simpson, Parker and McLeod. Dr, Harold Samuels and Sandra Page and Dr. David Beard are valued. Thanks for Peter Bamberger for his final presence...
She is survived by her husband, brother Terry McCabe and sister Gail Shell. She was a mother and teacher to many. Her great ability to listen and treat kindly endeared her to patients, doctors and families. We will each try to extend her wonderful spirit of life.
A Memorial Service will be 4:00pm Sunday, June 5, 2011 at St. James Reformed Church, Mt. Pleasant.
