Neal Vannoy McGlamery, Jr.
Vann
Neal Vannoy McGlamery, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, September 17, 2015. He was born November 4, 1942, the son of Rev. Neal and Edith Barrier McGlamery. He earned his Associate’s Degree from NC State University. Vann took great joy in being a dairy farmer. He later worked as sales associate for various farm supply businesses. After retirement, he continued raising sheep, goats, and cattle and maintained the fruit orchard.
Vann served as president and treasurer of the Georgeville Fire Department, president of the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club and the Cabarrus Cattlemen’s Association, charter chairman of the 4-H Support Committee, (which became the Cabarrus 4-H Foundation), Board Member of Cabarrus Farm Bureau, and was a member of the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Administrative Council. He was a 4-H leader, promoting 4-H sheep programs. He received the Georgeville Fireman of the Year Award in 1984 and Rotary Farmer of the Year Award in 1989. The McGlamery family received the 1995 Conservation Farm Family of the Year. They also hosted foreign exchange students from France, Costa Rica and Portugal.
Farming was his lifelong calling. He tended the land and animals but he sowed all the best things in his family: honesty, caring, forgiveness, hard work, love and faith. Some of his best qualities were his humor, patience, forbearance, determination and understanding. He always thought of others before himself, whether it was his family, friends, or the farm. Vann’s true gift was the mentorship he provided for over fifteen young men and women who were interested in agriculture, modeling for them a love of knowledge-based farming, an admirable work ethic, the ability to solve real life problems and the importance of respect and friendship.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda Foster McGlamery; son, Roland McGlamery and wife, Dana of Mt.Pleasant, NC; daughter, Leah McGlamery Leslie and husband, Michael of Durham, NC; daughter, Laura McGlamery Million and husband, Richard of Racine WI; sister, Julia McGlamery Marshall and husband, Alex of Charleston, SC. “Vanndaddy” cherished his grandchildren Jordan Turner, Madison McGlamery, Meredith McGlamery, Ian Leslie, Alora Leslie, Claire Leslie, Ella Million, Leslie Million.
