– Marvin Walter Barrier, Sr., 80, of the Rimer community, died at his home on Monday, May 4, 2015, following a period of declining health.
A celebration of Marvin’s life will begin at 2pm on Saturday, May 9, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 200 West Innes Street, Salisbury. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1pm.
Marvin was born in Cabarrus County, June 6, 1934, the only son of the late E.L. Barrier and Ollie Faggart Barrier. He was predeceased by his sisters Arlene Hahn, Louise Lipe and Marie Plott.
Marvin was a member of St. John’s Lutheran in Salisbury. Formerly a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran he was active in the life of the church, serving as vice-chairman, secretary and treasurer of the church council, a Sunday school teacher, choir member a member of the men’s group and numerous committees.
Retired from Fieldcrest-Cannon, Marvin enjoyed gardening, especially growing flowers, and vegetables. He was a skilled fix-it man who was undaunted by even the toughest challenge. He also was active with the Kannapolis Vagabond Travel Club and in the past years Harry D. Grimes Y’s Men’s Club.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Ridenhour Barrier, of the home; a son, Marvin W. Barrier, Jr. (Chuck); a daughter, Patti B. Beaver, and husband, Dennis; two grandchildren, Lauren Beaver and Garrett Beaver; and one great-grandchild, Jacob Beaver.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Marvin’s name to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 200 West Innes Street, Salisbury, NC, 28144.
