After a short period of declining health, Lynn Nesbit, age 72, passed away Sunday surrounded by family.
Memorial service will be held 2pm Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 100 St. John’s Ch. Rd., Concord NC 28025. Officiated by Rev. Dr. Keith Copeland. The Nesbit family will receive friends from 6-8pm Tuesday at Gordon Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.
Martha Lynette Nesbit was born December 30th, 1948 to John and Ruth Bowers of Concord, NC. Despite what her three older brothers may claim, she was definitely the youngest sibling. She grew up humbly on Cold Springs Road in Concord, attending Cold Springs UMC and Mount Pleasant High School, where she played on the girls’ basketball team. She graduated in 1967 and promptly married her high school sweetheart and school bus driver, Donald Ray Nesbit, who lived a few houses down the road. She joined Don at St. John's Lutheran Church where she became a member of the Elizabeth Cauble Circle. She worked as the secretary at St. Johns for many years. She later worked as the textbook coordinator for Cabarrus County Schools, where her meticulous record keeping meant school administrators learned never to doubt her numbers on how many textbooks they had been issued. She retired from the school system in 2011 and devoted herself to being a full time "Nana" to her three grandchildren.
All her life, Lynn invested herself in her family, sacrificing for herself so her children (and her grandchildren) could follow their dreams. She was always the head family cook, tour guide, party planner, and the designated present wrapper. She wanted nothing more than for your stay to be absolutely perfect. Traditions were sacred in Lynn's home - every birthday required a party, a card, and a cake, every Christmas involved a family trip to the mountains to cut a Christmas tree, every Shrove Tuesday involved Fastnachts, and everyone always, always went to the beach every summer, which was her happy place. Her three grandchildren visited her often. Nana's house always had apple slices for Zack, popsicles for Cooper, and circle peanut butter sandwiches for Audrey. The sign on the wall appropriately reads "I can at Nana's." She gave freely from the family garden as well as from her heart, and her engine seemed like it would never stop. Her sudden illness took everyone by surprise and leaves those who loved her with a huge hole in our hearts that will never be completely filled.
She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years Donald Ray Nesbit of Concord; son, Travis Nesbit (and wife Shannon); daughter Ashlyn Jordan (and husband David); grandchildren Audrey Nesbit, Cooper Jordan, and Zack Jordan; brothers Wayne Bowers (and wife Becky), Ronnie Bowers, and Terry Bowers; and sister-in-law Susan Hayes (and husband Jim).
Memorial donations may be made to Mt. Pleasant Food Pantry where Lynn volunteered for many years or the Sunshine Backpack Ministry at St. John's Lutheran Church, an organization Lynn cared about deeply.
The family wants to send their deepest thanks to the excellent EMS personnel and all the phenomenal nurses and doctors from the Emergency Department and the Intensive Care Unit at Atrium Health Cabarrus who cared for Lynn. They were knowledgeable, caring, and supportive in a difficult time.
