Libby Ruth Almond Morrison, 86, of Mt. Pleasant, peacefully slipped away to heaven Wednesday, April 10, 2019, at Mt. Pleasant House following a period of declining health.
A celebration of Libby’s life will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at her church, St. James Reformed, 8350 Walnut Street, Mt. Pleasant. Her family will receive friends at the church beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Duane Jarman will officiate at the service with interment to follow in the Rocky River Presbyterian Church cemetery in Harrisburg.
Libby was born January 21, 1933, in Stanly County to the late Joscie C. Almond and Rose Carpenter Almond. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Charles Hudson, and the love of her life and husband of 55 years, Fred E. Morrison, who died in 2014.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelor of Music in piano and pipe organ, Libby’s life was filled with music. She taught private piano lessons, retired in 1987 after 31 years as a music teacher in the Cabarrus County Schools, and was the organist at St. James for more than 50 years. In addition, Libby played for many weddings, accompanied many school choruses, furnished music for the Singing Saints, and provided music for many Miss Cabarrus County pageants. Throughout her life, Libby truly gave God the glory for her musical talent.
Together, Libby and Fred were the driving force behind the annual community choral concert still held at St. James every December that continues to draw talented voices from throughout Cabarrus County and beyond. In addition, they were instrumental in the founding of the Mt. Pleasant library.
Libby also earned a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and she also served on the staff of Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, for two years.
Left to cherish Libby’s memory are two sisters, JoAnn Almond Miller (L.C.) of Albemarle, and Janice Almond Hudson of Belmont; four nieces and nephews, whom she greatly enjoyed; and and a number great-nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Libby’s memory may be made to St. James Reformed Church, P.O. Box 447, Mt. Pleasant, NC, 28124.
