John T. Bunn, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away peacefully at his home Friday, November 26, 2021.
Graveside service will be 2:00pm Wednesday at St. James Reformed Church Cemetery, 8560 Walnut St., Mt. Pleasant, officiated by Rev. Anthony Pizzuti. Mr. Bunn will lie in state at Gordon Funeral Home from 1-2pm prior to the service.
A Mecklenburg County native, John was born October 9, 1936, to Marshall T. Bunn and Virginia Hopper Bunn. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Brenda Thornburg Bunn, who passed away in July 2020.
A North Carolina State University engineering graduate, John was a plumber by trade, joining his father in the business in 1958 and running it until his own retirement in 2010. In the mid-1960s John and Brenda moved from their native Charlotte to Mt. Pleasant, settling a farmstead northeast of town where they both worked the land, its forests and fields. In addition, together with John’s life-long friend attorney Rodney Purser, they acquired and maintained rental properties across Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties. Rodney passed away in October 2020. John also served his country with the US Army.
John was a long-time member of St. James Reformed Church, where he was active in the Men’s Brotherhood. In his leisure time, John was an accomplished woodworker, and through the years donated many beautiful and useful items—hand-crafted in wood from his farm—to the annual bazaar sponsored by the St. James Church Women.
