Ira William, “Doc”, Elwood, 86, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021, at St. Andrews Assisted Living Center in Concord.
A graveside service to celebrate Doc’s life will be held on Monday, February 1, 2021 at St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Mark Ericson will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the Cabarrus County Veteran’s Honor Guard. Mr. Elwood will lie in state at Gordon Funeral Home on Sunday, January 31 from 1:00-4:00pm.
Doc was born in Cabarrus County on November 23, 1934 to Thomas Elwood and Minnie Hough Elwood. He was predeceased by his wife, Joyce Eagle Elwood. Doc served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a dispatcher in the trucking industry where he worked for Fredrickson Trucking. During his life he also worked at Cannon Mills and as a butcher at Eagle’s Supermarket in Mount Pleasant. Doc loved to be outside and spent time gardening and many, many hours watching his grandson’s play baseball.
Doc is survived by his son, Brent Elwood (Angie) of Indian Trail and a daughter, Beth Yates (Darin) of Rockwell; sister, Margie Helms of Oakboro; four beloved grandchildren, Brad Elwood (Kalyn), John Elwood (Kayla), Todd Elwood, and Lauren Yates.
