Helen Hartman Shue

Helen Hartman Shue, 89, died Thursday, February 28, 2019 at The Preston House where she had been a resident for two years.

Funeral services for Helen will be held on Sunday, March 3 at 3:00 at Calvary Lutheran Church with the Rev. Deborah Frye presiding. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Helen was born April 16, 1929 in Salisbury to Oscar Leroy and Berdie Laura Hartman. She attended Boyden High School in Salisbury and graduated in 1947. She graduated from Catawba College on June 4, 1951 with a major in Sociology and a minor in Psychology. On August 11, 1957 she was married to Ben Adron Shue. She was a certified teacher who taught in many different content areas. Helen taught in Virginia for a couple of years before returning to Mt. Pleasant, NC. She then taught in Cabarrus County at Mt Pleasant Middle School and Mt. Pleasant High School for 30 years before retiring in 1991. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Ben Adron Shue, brother, Elwin Hartman, and sister, Jean Morgan.

Helen was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church since 1975. She sang in the Chancel Choir until 2012, helped lead the cherub choir with husband Ben, and directed Christmas plays with her husband and daughter. In 1995 when grandson, Colin started school, Mrs. Shue began volunteering in his classrooms at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School. Long after both grandsons had moved into middle school, Mrs. Shue continued volunteering and worked most closely with first grade teacher Mrs. Susan Airheart. Susan patiently continued to welcome Mrs. Shue into her classroom even as her illness progressed. Mrs. Shue was able to enjoy this time with Mrs. Airheart until 2012.

Helen is survived by daughter, Gretchen Hull (Gary) of Raleigh, daughter, Kirsten Hall (Tom Filippelli) of Mt. Pleasant, daughter, Erika Barrier (David) of Concord; grandson, Jeffrey Hull (Lauren) of Raleigh, grandson, Colin Barrier of Concord, grandson, Adron Barrier (Mandy) of Palmdale, California; and great grandson, Harrison Hull and great granddaughter, Molly Hull of Raleigh and sister, Adelaide Peele of Beckley, West Virginia.

The family would like to thank Preston House Assisted Living of Charlotte for the love and care they provided their mother over the past two years.  They would also like to thank Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte/Lake Norman office for the care and comfort of their mother for the past three months.
