Gail Tarlton Porter

Clara Gail Tarlton Porter, 90, of Mount Pleasant, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, with her daughter by her side.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 2, in the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery. The Porter family will receive friends following the service at Gail’s home.

Gail was born in Cabarrus County on July 17, 1934, to the late Everett and Merle Ury Tarlton. In addition to her parents, Gail was preceded in death by her husband, David Porter, three brothers, Charles, George, and Mike Tarlton, and sisters Margaret T. Smith and Alma Ward.

She was a long-time active member of the Lutheran Church of The Holy Trinity, where she found great joy in attending services and being part of the church community. Gail worked at Carol May Hosiery Mill for ten years, Penn Carol for 12 years, and then retired from Willis Hosiery as the Head of Quality Control after 25 years of service.

Gail loved reading, playing the piano, and singing. She had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and spent countless hours tending to her yard. For several years, she and her sister Alma also enjoyed their time stocking shelves and interacting with customers at Rick’s Food Mart once a week.

Gail had a special love for her great-grandchildren, who adored her delicious pies and chocolate chip cookies. She often shared stories about her childhood, reminiscing about growing up on the family farm where they raised and grew all their food except for coffee, rice and sugar. These memories were dear to her, and she loved passing them down to her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Gibson (Ronnie), granddaughter Kimber Hurlocker (Matt), great-grandchildren Josie, Knox, and Barrett Hurlocker, and nephew, Rick Lambert.
