Eugene “Gene” Morris Wheeler, 93, of Concord, passed away Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018, at Tucker Hospice House.
The Wheeler family will receive friends from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Gordon Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.
Born May 12, 1925, in Aroonstook County, Maine, Gene was the son of Parker Wheeler and Alverda Morris Wheeler. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Vera Sutton Wheeler, who died in 2014, and his granddaughter, Elizabeth Wheeler who died in 2014.
A 22-year-veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Gene served his country in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a Purple Heart recipient. Following his meritorious service, he co-founded and co-owned S&W Construction and Busbin-Wheeler Real Estate. A licensed commercial pilot, Gene had served as a flight instructor and soaring instructor as well as a real estate and technical trades instructor at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.
Gene is survived by his son, Jerry Wheeler of Concord; and a grandson, James Wheeler.
