Mr. Ernest Hillard "Jack" McAbee, 72 of Mt. Pleasant passed away, Friday, December 12, 2014 at the Tucker Hospice House.
Memorial service will be 3:00 pm Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Bruce Gwyn, burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The McAbee family will receive friends from 5-8pm Monday at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 1250 N. College St., Mt. Pleasant.
Mr. McAbee was born August 31, 1942 in Henderson County, NC son of the late Ernest Marion McAbee and Pauline Burrell McAbee. Upon graduation from high school, Jack served as a member of the Military Police in the United States Army in Germany, prior to joining the NCSHP Basic Training School. He was retired from the North Carolina Highway Patrol, serving thirty years at his original station in Cabarrus County. Upon his retirement, he received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina's highest civilian award, presented by Governor Jim Hunt. He was a member of the Cabarrus County Law Enforcement Officers Association. He coached and played softball for many years and was a lifetime North Carolina Tarheel Fan. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Fisher McAbee, daughter Kara McAbee Widener and husband Mark, mother in law, Margaret H. Fisher, brother, James "Jimmy" McAbee of Flat Rock, sister, Dinah Ann Hunter of Lexington, SC, granddaughter, Madison Widener.
Special thanks to the staff of Levine Cancer Institute at CMC-Northeast, Dr. David Turner and Dr. Scott Lankford. The family also wishes to thank the dedicated staff of nurses, CNAs, doctors and caregivers at Hospice and Pallliative Care of Cabarrus County for their compassion, kindness and generosity of spirit in taking care of the family for the past three weeks.
