Ellen Ann Whitley, 68, of Mt. Pleasant passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, June 4, 2016 after a brave fight with lung cancer.
Born Ellen Ann Dulin on August 15, 1947 in Cabarrus County, she is the youngest child of Annie Elizabeth Hinson Dulin and the late Lewis Eugene Dulin. A 1965 graduate of Hartsell School in Concord, she enjoyed a full yet simple life. Her work life began in Cannon Mills and later included various jobs in mental health and healthcare. She retired in 2008 from Carolinas Healthcare System Northeast as a hospital operator. She spent the next few years caring for her twin grandchildren, until she fell ill in August of last year. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, and doting grandmother. Mrs. Whitley was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with her family, and was lovingly regarded as a “homebody”.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband Daniel F. Whitley II, sons Larry Donahue and wife Paula (grandchildren Christopher, Brittnay, and Justin) of Kannapolis, Timothy Donahue (granddaughter Kaisi) of Butner, and Frankie Whitley and wife Deanna (grandchildren Max and Grace) of Concord. Stepchildren include, Lisa Whitley Velazquez and husband Victor (granddaughter Lauren) of Charlotte and Daniel Whitley III and wife Leslie (grandchildren Amber, Jeremy, Alexa, Taylor, and Maddie) of Gastonia. There are also 6 great-grandchildren. Brothers include, Ronald Dulin and wife Kaye, Richard Dulin and wife Bonnie, and Frankie Dulin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hospice of Cabarrus County or Levine Cancer Institute of Concord.
Visitation will be Saturday, June 11 from 10:00 am until 11:30 am at Gordon Funeral Home of Mt Pleasant, followed by a graveside service at noon at Cabarrus Memorial Gardens in Concord.
