Cynthia Worrell Buckwell

Cynthia Henrietta Worrell Buckwell, 74, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at Atrium Health-Cabarrus.

A celebration of her life will begin at 2 pm Sunday, March 17, at Bethel (Bear Creek) Reformed Church with the Rev. Patrick McCabe officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in the church cemetery. The Buckwell family will receive friends at the church beginning at 1 pm.

Cynthia was born August 21, 1949, in Cabarrus County to the late Leonard F. Worrell and Colleen McDaniel Worrell. In addition to her parents, Cynthia was predeceased by a son, Kenny Buckwell, in March 2021.

Hers was a servant’s heart as evidenced by the many long-term commitments she had in service to her community. As a life-long member of her church, Cynthia served several terms as president and vice president of the church women, sang in the choir, assisted with Kid’s Club and Vacation Bible School, and taught adult Sunday school classes. She was devoted to local Boy Scouts of America activities, serving as a pack den leader and co-director of Cub Scout Day at Camp Cabarrus and Frank Lisk Park. Her 40 years of service earned her the coveted Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor in scouting leadership. Cynthia was a master at making home-made noodles and enjoyed making sure Northeast Fire Department was well supplied for their annual chicken noodle suppers. Her many years of membership in American Legion Post 301 Auxiliary allowed her to honor and celebrate her family members’ service to their country, and over the years, she sold countless dozens of poppies each Memorial Day to support services to veterans.

For more than 55 years, Cynthia was an Avon representative, helping friends and neighbors enhance their well-being. She was a substitute teacher for more than 30 years in the Mt. Pleasant Schools from elementary through high school grades. For more than 18 years, she enjoyed working with her husband in the roasting and selling of corn-on-the-cob at the Cabarrus County Fair. Whatever her activity in life, for Cynthia it was about connecting with people where they were and lending a hand when help was needed.

An avid Duke fan, through the years Cynthia supported her family in all the sports they played from church softball leagues to local recreation teams to a variety of school-sponsored sports. She treasured her time in her garden, growing a variety of vegetables, but her favorites were hot peppers.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 57 years, Jimmy Buckwell; a son, Douglas Buckwell; a sister, Susan W. Euart (Dave); daughter-in-law, Shanin Hatley Buckwell; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Memorial gifts may be directed to Bethel (Bear Creek) Reformed Church, 18937 Bear Creek Church Road, or Northeast Fire Department, 1580 N. Lentz Harness Shop Road, both in Mt. Pleasant, NC, 28124.
