Archie Evans Moose, 94, transcended from earthly life to everlasting life on 07 April 2011, at the North Carolina State Veterans Nursing Home in Salisbury. He will always be remembered for his personal generosity, dedicated service to family, church, and country, his selflessness and heartfelt philanthropy to worthy causes.
Archie was born 02 August 1916 in Cabarrus County to the late Arthur Farel Moose and Tena Rowland Moose, both of whose heritage was Dutch German. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Lucille Moose, Marjorie Rich, Lena Brown Rich, and Birdia Baker. Left to cherish his memories are two highly regarded brothers and their wives, Harold (Ruth) Moose and Melvin (Barbara) Moose of Mt. Pleasant, eight devoted nephews, six loving nieces, a number of special grandnephews and grandnieces, and a host of wonderful friends.
Archie Moose was educated at the Bear Creek Old Field School and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. He studied for two years at Pfeiffer College, received his Bachelor of Arts Degree, with a major in History, from the University of Maryland.
Archie led an industrious and productive life, beginning his work career on the family farm. He worked for Cannon Mills in Kannapolis, 1936 - 1941, served in the United States Army, 1941 - 1966, and worked as a sales associate at Belk, Carolina Mall,1971 - 1979.
During his military career, Archie held the enlisted grades of Private, Corporal, and Sergeant. In 1943, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant while serving in Australia, and subsequently held Officer Grades of First Lieutenant, Captain, Major, and Lieutenant Colonel. Archie was awarded the following military medals and decorations: Asiatic Campaign, Philippine Liberation, American Defense Service, American Campaign, World War II Victory, Good Conduct, Presidential Unit, United Nations Service, Korean Service, Bronze Star, Korean Presidential Unit, National Defense Service; Philippine Presidential Unit, National Defense Service, Philippine Presidential Unit, Commendation Ribbon, 10 Overseas Bars, One Oak Leaf Cluster, United States Army Freedom Team Salute.
Archie was a skilled and avid gardener, a mesmerizing story teller, a voracious reader, and an exceptionally gifted writer. He was an active lifetime member of Bethel Bear Creek United Church of Christ and served as Sunday School Superintendent, Consistory Member, Historian, Choir Member, and Sunday School Teacher.
Archie's family wishes to express appreciation to the NC State Veterans Nursing Home for their exceptional compassion, care, and support.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, 10 April, from 1:30 until 2:30, at the Archie E. Moose Fellowship Hall (near the church) after which Archie Moose will lie in state at Bethel Bear Creek United Church of Christ, 18937 Bear Creek Church Road, Mt. Pleasant, from 2:45 until 3:00. The Service of Remembrance will follow at 3 pm, officiated by Pastor Terri Barringer and Rev. Bobby Bonds. Burial will take place in the church cemetery immediately following the service.
