Albert Luther Maxwell

Albert Luther Maxwell, Sr., 86, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Sunday, May 7, 2017, at St. Andrews Assisted Living in Concord.

A celebration of Luther’s life will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at Cold Springs United Methodist Church, where he was a life-long member. The Rev. Tony Bell and the Rev. Mary Hatley will officiate, and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Maxwell family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. at the church.

Luther was born in Cabarrus County on Nov. 11, 1930, to Louis and Lucille Barnhardt Maxwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mavis Sanders Maxwell; a son, Foy Maxwell; and a sister, Novella Kluttz.

He was U.S. Marine Corps’ veteran. In his working life, he was a licensed building contractor who wore a nail apron and swung a hammer as long as his health allowed. He was active in his church and in the Mt. Pleasant Lion’s Club, where he was a past president and a Tail Twister. He was the recipient of the Jack Stickley Award and the Melvin Jones Award, and was named Mt. Pleasant Lion of the year in 1975-76 and in 1980-81, all honors earned for his service to the Lion’s and the worthy causes the international service organization supports.

Luther is survived by his wife, Faye Strickland Maxwell of the home; a son, Albert Luther (A.L.) Maxwell, Jr.; two daughters, Sherry M. Rinehardt (Tim), and Katelyn Maxwell; daughter-in-law, Brenda Maxwell; and two step-daughters, Sonia Cassels and Cynthia Isenhour.
